מוות נתפס בד"כ כהפסקת החיים אך בביולוגיה יש עדויות רבות שמוות הוא חלק מהחיים. האם יש בעדויות אלו ללמדנו משהו על המוות שלנו? בקורס זה נלמד על מוות תאי על צורותיו השונות ועל חשיבותו בהתפתחות ובתפקוד טוב של האורגניזם. נראה מה קורה בגוף לתא שמת ואילו מחלות עלולות להתפתח במקרה של שיבוש. בהמשך, נעבור לאדם, נבין ממה מתים, איך מתים, ונשווה מנהגי קבורה מדתות שונות למנהגי "קבורה" של תאים בגוף. נעצור ברגע המוות. מה קורה ברגע המוות וסביב המוות הן ע"פ דתות שונות והן ע"פ מידע ועדויות תוך השוואה למידע ברמה תאית. נדון בשאלות אתיות: החולה הנוטה למות - החוק והיישום, וכן במושג "מוות מתוך רחמים". נסיים בשאלות על משמעות המוות ומתוך כך גם על משמעות החיים, ע"פ דתות ומורי דרך ומתוך הקבלה לתא.

Death is generally considered the end of life, but in biology there is evidence that death is a part of life. Following these biological observations, could we understand better our own death In this course we will learn about different forms of cellular death and its importance in the development and in function of the organism. We will learn what diseases may develop when cell death does not occur in the normal manner. Next, we will consider to the human being. We will try to understand the reasons for death and how we die, and compare burying ceremonies from various religions to “burying ceremonies” in cells. We will stop at the moment of death and examine what really happens in and around the moment of death according to various religions, and at the cellular level. We will discuss ethical questions: the patient who is near death, the law and its application, and euthanasia. We will end with questions about the meaning of death and life in religion and philosophy, and at the cellular level
