Among the great poets of literary history, certain names like Homer, Shakespeare and Whitman are instantly recognizable. However, there’s an early 20th century great poet whose name you may not know: Guillaume Apollinaire. Geneviève Emy shows how during Apollinaire’s short lifetime he created poetry that combined text and image in a way that seemingly predicted a artistic revolution to come.

Dr. Michael Greger: "How Not To Die" | Talks at Google

source: Talks at Google   2016年2月11日
Dr. Greger visited Google NYC to discuss his new book - How Not to Die.

The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle. In How Not to Die, Dr. Michael Greger, the internationally-recognized lecturer, physician, and founder of NutritionFacts.org, examines the fifteen top causes of death in America—heart disease, various cancers, diabetes, Parkinson’s, high blood pressure, and more—and explains how nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches, freeing us to live healthier lives.

The simple truth is that most doctors are good at treating acute illnesses but bad at preventing chronic disease. The 15 leading causes of death claim the lives of 1.6 million Americans annually. This doesn’t have to be the case. By following Dr. Greger’s advice, all of it backed up by peer-reviewed scientific evidence, you will learn which foods to eat and which lifestyle changes to make to live longer.

History of prostate cancer in your family? Put down that glass of milk and add flaxseed to your diet. Have high blood pressure? Hibiscus tea can work better than a leading hypertensive drug—and without the side effects. What about liver disease? Drinking coffee can reduce liver inflammation. Battling breast cancer? Consuming soy is associated with prolonged survival. Worried about heart disease (our #1 killer)? Switch to a whole-food, plant-based diet, which has been repeatedly shown not just to help prevent the disease, but arrest and even reverse it.

In addition to showing what to eat to help prevent the top 15 causes of death, How Not to Die includes Dr. Greger’s Daily Dozen—a checklist of the foods we should try to consume every day. Full of practical, actionable advice and surprising, cutting edge nutritional science, these doctor’s orders are just what we need to live longer, healthier lives.

Slavoj Zizek | Vote: For Hegel | Full Film

source: Zizekian Studies    2016年1月26日
Zizek claims that we need to repeat Hegel (not return) and reinterpret Hegel as a dialectical materialist and not an idealist of absolute knowing. How can we use Hegel to traverse the ideological fantasy and act in accordance to the truth of an event? How do we overcome subservience to a market system that dictates our ethical discourse?
For Hegel, Žižek posits, the spirit is the wound of nature- it derails every natural balance, but it is at the time spirit itself that heals its own wound. In his lecture, Žižek will expand upon this Hegelian perspective to consider its philosophical, theological, and political implications: Why is the Fall a happy occurrence? How does permissiveness turn into oppression? Why does only the most brutal capitalist alienation open up the possibility for freedom?

Michael Moore: "Where to Invade Next" | Talks at Google

source: Talks at Google  2016年2月9日
Academy award winning filmmaker Michael Moore stopped by Google to discuss his latest film, "Where to Invade Next."
"Where to Invade Next" is an expansive, rib-tickling, and subversive comedy in which Moore, playing the role of 'invader,' visits a host of nations to learn how the U.S. could improve its own prospects. The creator of "Fahrenheit 9/11" and "Bowling for Columbine" is back with this hilarious and eye-opening call to arms. Turns out the solutions to America’s most entrenched problems already exist in the world—they’re just waiting to be co-opted.
In theaters February 12, 2016.

Gayatri Spivak: Future, pasts, languages, Balkans

source: Kanal uporabnika Prisotnoststeje    2012年5月20日
SUBVERSIVE FORUM - THE FUTURE OF EUROPE, Zagreb, 18. 5. 2012
Gayatri Spivak: Future, pasts, languages, Balkans
The idea of Europe is historically and currently precarious as the basis of any unification. The Latin Middle Ages do not offer a good analogy. Monocultures are always in a double bind. In order to think Europe as a territory with borders that can negotiate the performative contradictions of the borderlessness of global capital, every citizen must rethink nation as a site of capital-management. Is this possible? I believe it can be if education makes the appropriate changes and this shift is understood as both poison and medicine, depending upon its collective use. 'Future' can then be seen as part of the gamble. To supplement this shift away from nation-thinking to capital-management thinking, the incalculable element of languages must be taken with the utmost seriousness. This is particularly apposite in the Balkan context. This is the pre-text of the short term economic struggle. A comment on the byzantine movements of Greece and Turkey on the European chessboard might enter here. And digital idealism should be aware that social networking is dependent upon constituted subjects in transformed collectivities as described in the opening of this abstract.

Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak
Indian literary critic, theorist and a University Professor at Columbia University. She is best known for the essay Can the Subaltern Speak?, considered a founding text of postcolonialism, and for her translation of Jacques Derrida's Of Grammatology. She describes herself as a 'practical Marxist-feminist-deconstructionist'. She is also a visiting faculty member at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta. Spivak is best known for her contemporary cultural and critical theories to challenge the 'legacy of colonialism' and the way readers engage with literature and culture. She often focuses on the cultural texts of those who are marginalized by dominant western culture: the new immigrant, the working class, women and other 'postcolonial subjects'. Some of her books are A Critique of Postcolonial Reason Towards a History of the Vanishing Present (1999), Outside in the Teaching Machine (1993), Death of a Discipline (2003), Nationalism and Imagination (2010).
