The Mystery of Consciousness with Richard Smoley

source: New Thinking Allowed    2017年1月4日
Richard Smoley is editor of Quest: The Journal of the Theosophical Society in America. He is also former editor of Gnosis Magazine. His books include Hidden Wisdom: The Guide to the Western Inner Traditions, Inner Christianity: The Guide to the Esoteric Tradition, Forbidden Faith: The Secret History of Gnosticism, The Essential Nostradamus, Conscious Love: Insights from Mystical Christianity, The Dice Game of Shiva: How Consciousness Creates the Universe, The Supernatural: Writings on an Unknown History, The Deal: A Guide to Radical and Complete Forgiveness, and How God Became God: What Scholars Are Really Saying About God and the Bible.
Here he proposes a simple definition for consciousness – an awareness of self and other. Essentially, all consciousness, then, involves a sense of relationship. He notes that this recognition of relationship can be observed even among molecules, atoms, and particles. This is a viewpoint akin to panpsychism. He acknowledges the mystical state of awareness sometimes referred to as “consciousness without an object”. He also maintains that our understanding of consciousness, and its limitations, is greatly influenced by cultural conditioning.

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in "parapsychology" ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). He is a past vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology; and is the recipient of the Pathfinder Award from that Association for his contributions to the field of human consciousness. He is also past-president of the non-profit Intuition Network, an organization dedicated to creating a world in which all people are encouraged to cultivate and apply their inner, intuitive abilities.

The role of sensorimotor experiences in aesthetic appreciation by Corinne Jola

The Artful Brain Conference: The role of sensorimotor experiences in aesthetic appreciation - Corinne Jola (INSERM-CEA Cognitive Neuroimaging Unit)

Individuals and groups have communicated, expressed, and formed their emotions and identities through artistic practices such as music, painting, or dancing since ancient times. At the basis of art is a continuously refined aesthetic language which cuts across social barriers and enhances cross-cultural understanding. It is thus of huge socio-cultural and economical interest to better understand the brain functions that underlie our urge to create and appreciate art. Further, an in-depth knowledge of the developing brain mechanisms that help us understanding each other's' artistic creations through time informs us about the development of cognition processes and has a huge potential for rehabilitation. However, the study of art perception has its pitfalls. In my talk, I will introduce the research constraints on aesthetic experiences when watching dance. I will then present in more detail two of my recent studies in which we attempted to circumvent known issues in 'experimental aesthetics' by using either existing artistic works or professionally choreographed dance pieces to study dance-experienced spectators' kinaesthetic responses.
