“Tiling the Genome: Naming the Parts of Your Genome That Make You You”
As part of the DNA Lecture Series at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Alexander (Sasha) Wait Zaranek suggests that, someday soon, doctors may use the information from individuals’ own DNA to realize precision medicine.
Zaranek is the chief scientist at Curoverse Inc. and the director of informatics at the Harvard Personal Genome Project.
Introduction by Jeantine E. Lunshof, visiting fellow in genetics at the Harvard Medical School.

Ian Morris on How Human Values Evolve

source: The RSA    2016年4月28日
In a bold new theory, historian Ian Morris argues that humans have found three main ways to get the energy they need – foraging, farming and fossil fuels – and that in each of these epochs, the dominant energy source sets limits on the kinds of societies that can succeed, and each society in turn rewards specific values.

Louie Psihoyos: "Racing Extinction" | Talks at Google

source: Talks at Google    2016年6月7日
Louie Psihoyos is Executive Director of the Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS), and the Academy Award®-winning director of The Cove and Racing Extinction. He is also the visionary force behind the unprecedented large-scale projections on the United Nations Headquarters, the Empire State Building, and St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican. Previously a National Geographic filmmaker for 17 years, Louie uses the power of imagery to convey complex ideas with the ambitious goal of changing the world.
Louie's most recent film, Racing Extinction, takes on the current mass extinction of species of our own making. Scientists predict we could lose up to half of all species by the end of the century due to habitat destruction, pollution, over-consumption and climate change. Racing Extinction follows a team of individuals that uncover this unseen extinction, but more importantly, come together with an innovative and inspiring approach to garner the world's attention and create solutions. The film is more than just a movie – it's a movement to call on everyone to #StartWith1Thing to curb this mass extinction and collectively overhaul how we impact the planet.
From sustainable energy and transport, to diet, using art as activism, and perceiving boundaries like catnip, Louie's vision is ambitious and disruptive. To date his projects have reached several billion people across the globe, and there is much more underway.

Amanda Haas: "The Anti-Inflammation Cookbook" | Talks at Google

source: Talks at Google    2016年5月17日
Williams-Sonoma Culinary Director Amanda Haas will demonstrate two recipes from her new book.
Haas is a cookbook author and professional recipe tester and developer. Her passion for improving people's lives through food has culminated in several cookbooks. Her most recent one, “The Anti-Inflammation Cookbook: the Delicious Way to Reduce Inflammation and Stay Healthy”, combines her pursuit of wellness through food with her desire to bring people together around the table.

The book reveals recent research about the impact inflammation has on general wellness and many common health conditions. She joins forces with Dr. Bradly Jacobs and explains how eating certain foods and avoiding others can be a highly effective way to diminish and manage inflammation. Through 65 delicious, simple inflammation-busting recipes, she shares how sometimes good food can be the best medicine.
