The handmaiden's emissions: international shipping in changing climates (Tristan Smit - 26 Jan 2016)

source: UCL Lunch Hour Lectures    2016年2月1日
Speaker: Dr Tristan Smith
UCL Bartlett School of Environment Energy and Resources
International shipping is the system that enables globalisation. The way it quietly and efficiently executes its role has led to its labelling as 'the handmaiden of world trade'. But this enabler of export-led economic growth is also heavily dependent on fossil fuels, which have significant and growing environmental impacts.

Impacts of human disturbance on forests in south east Asia

source: Cambridge University     2016年4月14日
How has human disturbance impacted on tropical forests of Malaysian Borneo? Dr Tommaso Jucker, postdoc in the Department of Plant Sciences, discusses how, using remote sensing technology, he is collaborating with other disciplines and NGOs that complement each other’s areas of expertise to understand what happens to a forest when it has been so severely degraded.

This film is one of a series of eight that showcases the extent that conservation-related research is embedded in a wide range of academic fields and involves collaboration with non-academic partners beyond the University. The films are produced by the University of Cambridge Conservation Research Institute (UCCRI), which was established in October 2013 to foster a cross-disciplinary approach within the University of Cambridge.

“Conservation is primarily underpinned by human behaviour and it is therefore vital to understand the social factors, such as cultural drivers or geographical patterns, which shape our environment, as well as developing our biological and scientific knowledge.” Dr Bhaskar Vira, Director of UCCRI.

Firth Lectures 2016: Imagining Faith; perceptions of religious belief in modern writing - Part 1

source: University of Nottingham    2016年4月14日
Dr Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury, looks at three piece of contemporary fiction to explore how they describe the religious person and how within those stories there is a portrayal of holiness. This is first of the two Firth Lectures in the University for 2016.

The Firth Memorial Lectureship was founded by the Reverend John d’ewe Evelyn Firth in memory of his father, John Benjamin Firth, Historian of Nottingham and his mother Helena Gertrude Firth. The lecturer is appointed biennially by the Council of the University on the recommendation of the Senate of the University, and under the terms of the Trust the lecturer delivers a public lecture or lectures on some aspect of the Christian Faith in relation to contemporary problems. The first person to hold the Lectureship was the renowned theologian Paul Tillich and there has been a series of eminent theologians and philosophers who have included among others Baroness Warnock and Professor Jϋrgen Moltmann.

In many ways, our memories make us who we are, helping us remember our past, learn and retain skills, and plan for the future. And for the computers that often act as extensions of ourselves, memory plays much the same role. Kanawat Senanan explains how computer memory works.
