The milk industry produces in excess of 840 million tons of products each year. Why do humans drink so much milk? And given that all mammals lactate, why do we favor certain types of milk over others? Jonathan J. O’Sullivan describes how milk is made.

Daniel Amen: "The Brain's Warrior Way" | Talks at Google

source: Talks at Google    2017年1月3日
Dr. Daniel G. Amen is a double board-certified psychiatrist, professor, TV producer, and 10-time New York Times bestselling author. He is one of the world's foremost experts on using brain imaging tools to help optimize and treat patients. He is founder and medical director of Amen Clinics, which has the world’s largest database of functional brain scans relating to behavior.

Dr. Amen visited Google to discuss his latest book, "The Brain Warrior's Way: Ignite Your Energy and Focus, Attack Illness and Aging, Transform Pain into Purpose" He explained that psychiatrists are among the only medical professionals who do not consistently utilize imaging of the body part they treat (the brain). But looking at the brain changes everything – Dr. Amen described the daily behaviors we can take that either improve or harm our brain's health.

The Artful Brain Conference: What Art can tell us about the Brain - Margaret Livingstone (Harvard)

Artists have been doing experiments on vision longer than neurobiologists. Some major works of art have provided insights as to how we see; some of these insights are so fundamental that they can be understood in terms of the underlying neurobiology. For example, artists have long realized that color and luminance can play independent roles in visual perception. Picasso said, "Colors are only symbols. Reality is to be found in luminance alone." This observation has a parallel in the functional subdivision of our visual systems, where color and luminance are processed by the newer, primate-specific What system, and the older, colorblind, Where (or How) system. Many techniques developed over the centuries by artists can be understood in terms of the parallel organization of our visual systems. I will explore how the segregation of color and luminance processing are the basis for why some Impressionist paintings seem to shimmer, why some op art paintings seem to move, some principles of Matisse's use of color, and how the Impressionists painted "air". Central and peripheral vision are distinct, and I will show how the differences in resolution across our visual field make the Mona Lisa's smile elusive, and produce a dynamic illusion in Pointillist paintings, Chuck Close paintings, and photomosaics. I will explore how artists have intuited important features about how our brains extract relevant information about faces and objects, and I will discuss why learning disabilities may be associated with artistic talent.

Philosophy and Current Events: Shooting in Russia over Kant Argument

source: Gregory B. Sadler     2013年9月18日

This is a video in which I discuss the recent well-publicized, but not particularly well-reported fistfight and shooting (with rubber bullets) that took place in Rostov-on-Don in southern Russia -- provoked, according to police by an argument over Immanuel Kant's thought or texts. I talk about five things about this I find particularly interesting, in the process discussing two formulations of Kant's Categorical Imperative, and mentioning a few other ideas from Kant's works that would indicate how these brawlers were at odds with the philosopher about whom they were fighting.
For those who are interested, I've also recently written a blog post in Orexis Dianoētikē about this very incident: http://gbsadler.blogspot.com/2013/10/...

Bernard Stiegler: Towards a European Way of Life

source: Eidos84     2010年12月26日
Bernard Stiegler: "Towards a European Way of Life". Lecture given at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, London, in 2008.
Bernard Stiegler is a French philosopher and Director of the Institut de recherche et d'innovation (IRI). He is also the founder in 2005 of the political and cultural group, Ars Industrialis, and founder in 2010 of the philosophy school, Ecole de Philosophie d'Epineuil-le-Fleuriel. His best known work is "Technics and Time, 1: The Fault of Epimetheus".
Between 1978 and 1983 Stiegler was incarcerated for armed robbery, first at the Prison Saint-Michel in Toulouse, and then at the Centre de détention in Muret. It was during this period that he became interested in philosophy, studying it by correspondence with Gérard Granel at the Université de Toulouse-Le-Mirail. His transformation in prison is recounted in his book, Passer à l'acte (2003).
Stiegler's work is influenced by, among others, Sigmund Freud, André Leroi-Gourhan, Gilbert Simondon, Friedrich Nietzsche, Paul Valéry, Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, and Jacques Derrida.
Key themes in his work are technology, time, individuation, consumerism, consumer capitalism, technological convergence, digitization, Americanization, and the future of politics and human society.
