Bill Draper: The Origins of Venture Capital in Silicon Valley

Bill Draper is one of the West Coast's first venture capitalists, and over his career has witnessed the rapid emergence and continued development of the venture capital field in Silicon Valley. The brainchild behind the venture capital funds Draper Richards, Draper International, and Sutter Hill Ventures, in this fireside chat, Bill discusses the rise of Sand Hill Road and Silicon Valley and its continued evolution.
Course Description: We often discuss how technology is reinvented and disrupted, but there is also a good amount of change occurring within the venture capital industry. Within the past several decades there have been new entrants, from incubators to angels to different models of venture capital.
The course explores changes in the venture capital industry: from the rise of Sand Hill Road and investing in the dot-com bubble, to incubators and accelerators, equity crowdfunding platform, and different models of venture capital today. Through lectures, guest speakers and interviews, the course explores how companies are funded, grown, and scaled, hearing from individuals who have been at the forefront of the industry as investors, technologists and entrepreneurs.

Esperanto: What, Why, How

Some comments for the video:
0:17 An agitation that the talk has finally started affected my English which is bad enough even without that :( Sorry.
1:45 Complete miss. I meant the country - and a different one - and I would still have been wrong. Zamenhof was born in Białystok which at the time belonged to the Russian Empire (now Poland).
14:18 "Poste" is a proverb, not a pronoun.
19:45 Zurich German kicks in (I'm in the second week of the language course). The correct possessive pronoun would be "mia", not "mis"
21:49 "They" is just a single person that I asked. A Spanish-speaking person said (today) that it looks like Czech language to him.
26:35 The question being asked is "what actual scientific principles were used in creation of Esperanto?"
37:45 The question being asked is "what is an estimate of a chance of meeting another esperantist?"
38:18 The "99.X%" figure that I use is actually my interpretation of the phrase "almost all" plus some other facts
40:30 I misunderstood the question. The question was "is it mostly no problem to split a stream of sounds into individual words" and my answer was to the question "is it easy enough to segment written words into sub-parts". The answer to original question would be "I would expect so, but I don't know".

Conscious Love with Richard Smoley

Richard Smoley is editor of Quest: The Journal of the Theosophical Society in America. He is also former editor of Gnosis Magazine. His books include Hidden Wisdom: The Guide to the Western Inner Traditions, Inner Christianity: The Guide to the Esoteric Tradition, Forbidden Faith: The Secret History of Gnosticism, The Essential Nostradamus, Conscious Love: Insights from Mystical Christianity, The Dice Game of Shiva: How Consciousness Creates the Universe, The Supernatural: Writings on an Unknown History, The Deal: A Guide to Radical and Complete Forgiveness, and How God Became God: What Scholars Are Really Saying About God and the Bible.
Here he proposes that, in spite of our spiritual ideals, romantic relationships are predicated upon an “equation” regarding the social standing, talents, and attributes of each partner. In arranged marriages, where people learn to love each other after they are wedded, this equation is particularly important. The esoteric tradition of Gurdjieff, from which the phrase “conscious love” is derived, teaches that the higher ranges of love are attained through work on oneself. The initiations described by Rudolf Steiner require one to pass by the “Guardians of the Threshold” that represent the parts of ourselves we consider ugly.

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in "parapsychology" ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). He is a past vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology; and is the recipient of the Pathfinder Award from that Association for his contributions to the field of human consciousness. He is also past-president of the non-profit Intuition Network, an organization dedicated to creating a world in which all people are encouraged to cultivate and apply their inner, intuitive abilities.

Mark Carney | Policy Issues Affecting the Bank of England

A lecture by Mark Carney, the Governor of the Bank of England, followed by a discussion and Q&A with Amartya Sen, Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University, chaired by Professor Lord Stern.
Mark Carney is Governor of the Bank of England and Chairman of the Monetary Policy Committee, Financial Policy Committee and the Board of the Prudential Regulation Authority. The Governor joined the Bank on 1 July 2013. After a thirteen-year career with Goldman Sachs in its London, Tokyo, New York and Toronto offices, Mark Carney was appointed Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada in August 2003. In November 2004, he left the Bank of Canada to become Senior Associate Deputy Minister of Finance. He held this position until his appointment as Governor of the Bank of Canada on 1 February 2008. Mark Carney served as Governor of the Bank of Canada and Chairman of its Board of Directors until 1 June 2013.

Amartya Sen is Thomas W Lamont University Professor and Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University. He is the recipient of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Economics and an LSE Honorary Fellow.
Nicholas Stern is the Chair of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the LSE and is currently the President of the British Academy.

The Artful Brain Conference: Brains as objects. Mind as Matter - Marius Kwint (Portsmouth)

This presentation is not so much about how the brain perceives or constructs art, but how art constructs and represents the brain. It will offer the perspective of the guest curator (an art historian) on the making of the Wellcome Collection exhibition Brains: the Mind as Matter, which showed to considerable publicity and popularity in London in 2012 and is currently exhibiting in Manchester at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI). The Brains exhibition does not primarily attempt to explain brain function, but to view the brain as a material object made meaningful through the history of scientific, technological, artistic and cultural practices, and representation. It concentrates on the brain as a physical presence, both embodied and disembodied, and the modes of collecting, preservation, imaging and direct intervention that it has undergone. This account will look behind the scenes at the research and production process for the exhibition, also suggest future avenues for investigating the relationship between the brain as a figure and visual and material culture.
