Should we be looking for life elsewhere in the universe? - Aomawa Shields

As the number of “potentially habitable” planets that astronomers find continues to rise, we seem ever closer to answering the question, “Are we alone in the universe?” But should we be looking for life elsewhere? If we were to find life in one of these worlds, should we try to contact any beings who may live there? Is that wise? Aomawa Shields navigates the murky waters of pursuing curiosity.

Weissberg Forum for Discourse in the Public Square: Big Data

source: New York University     2016年5月31日
The 4th Annual Weissberg Forum for Discourse in the Public Square focused on “Big Data”. In today's world, our reliance on technology has created a Big Data revolution that has transformed how we live, work, and think. Many questions arise, however, when it comes to the ethical issues related to privacy, confidentiality and identity, especially when personal data is so easily and readily collected, creating the ability to generate enormous amounts of power and wealth. The Weissberg Forum explored this conflict between utility and privacy from a variety of perspectives, including law, commerce, health, and national security. Charles Seife presented a keynote address entitled, "Information Battles: The Double-Edged Sword of Big Data"

Quine's Two Dogmas of Empiricism & Ontological Relativity

source: Philosophical Overdose    2016年4月1日
An introduction is given of W. V. Quine's Two Dogmas of Empiricism, as well as Quine's indeterminacy of reference/meaning, ontological relativity, and epistemology naturalized. Two Dogmas of Empiricism was a famous article in which Quine attacked the analytic-synthetic distinction and reductionism. The former involves a strict separation between questions of language and questions of fact, while the latter is the belief that every meaningful statement about the world can be reduced to statements about sensory experience. Both were crucial assumptions of 20th century empiricism (i.e. logical positivism). In their place, Quine offered instead a holistic conception of knowledge (what's sometimes called "confirmation holism").
Willard Van Orman Quine was a famous American philosopher and logician who made important contributions to the fields of logic, ontology, philosophy of language, philosophy of science, and mathematics.
This talk was given by someone named Darren Staloff. Apparently, the last 30 seconds were cut off...I have no idea why, but sorry about that!

source: Talks at Google      2016年6月27日
Mathew Shurka was 16 years old when he was forced to endure five years of so-called "conversion therapy" for coming out to his father as gay.
Now 28 and proudly out, Mathew has become a leading national advocate for banning the destructive practice of LGBT “conversion therapy”. Mathew is joined for this exclusive talk at Google by his mother, Jane Shurka, a former supporter of conversion therapy (now advocate for ending the practice), as well as his former bully, Sam Miner, to speak about their experiences.

Gloria Moskowitz-Sweet & Erica Pelavin: "Parenting the Always-On Generat...

source: Talks at Google       2016年5月24日
Children are being exposed to technology at younger ages than ever before. This is a time when perspective taking and empathy are growing and can be nurtured. As we move from being managers to consultants for our teens, staying actively involved is crucial to raising ethical and responsible digital citizens. This talk will look at the issues children experience today, including emotional responses to social media, and how to manage online reputations for college, work, and beyond.

Gloria Moskowitz-Sweet has been a school social worker, educator, program developer, and university lecturer since 1981. She was the coordinator of Parents Place Community Education and Bullying Prevention Center on the Peninsula for five years and a lecturer in the graduate program of social work at San Jose State University for 20 years.

Erica is a family psychologist with over 20 years’ experience. She has been trained and certified to teach the Committee for Children's 'Steps to Respect' and 'Second Step Bullying Prevention' curricula to teachers, administrators and youth. In addition to her counseling work with adolescents, she facilitates both parenting and teacher seminars in media literacy and 21st Century Learning Skills.

They are the co-founders of My Digital TAT2 (www.mydigitaltat2.com), which provides education and training in four key sectors: Schools, Families, Corporations, and Health Care. Since 2012, they have worked with more than 14,000 students, 5,000 parents, 400 educators, and over 100 schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. They have worked with more than 800 health care providers and we currently provide workshops and training to employees at Facebook, Hewlett Packard, Stanford University, Kaiser Permanente, and more. Most recently they presented at the annual RSA Conference, the world's largest information security event.
