GSD Talks | Innovate: Xiangning Li

source: Harvard GSD    2016年4月21日
4/21/16
Xiangning Li, visiting professor in architecture at Harvard GSD in spring 2016, will discuss contemporary Chinese architecture in terms of its increasing focus on interior space and matter and the return of “memory.” Can these be understood as critiques of the “iconic turn” the country’s architecture has suffered in recent decades? Is this reaction an antidote to the Western corporate/formalist “virus”? Could it be an interesting argument opposing any conservative response to the internal aim for a “normal” architecture?
Xiangning Li is deputy dean and professor of history, theory and criticism at Tongji University College of Architecture and Urban Planning. He has lectured widely on contemporary Chinese architecture and urbanism and published on these topics in international architecture journals. He has been a visiting scholar at MIT, a fellow at MAK Center of Art and Architecture in Los Angeles, and a visiting professor at TU Darmstadt; and he has curated the Chengdu and Shenzhen Biennale exhibitions, among various distinctions.

The Zika Crisis: Latest Findings | The Forum at HSPH

source: Harvard University      2016年3月9日
The ongoing spread of the Zika virus — and its unconfirmed potential links to a birth defect called microcephaly — have raised worldwide alarms. This Forum examined what we know and don’t know about the virus, drawing parallels and lessons from another disease outbreak, Ebola, that we can apply to the Zika emergency. An expert panel discussed the current status of our understanding of the Zika virus and its health effects; containment strategies.
Presented March 4, 2016 in Collaboration with Reuters.

Barbara Arrowsmith-Young: "The Woman Who Changed Her Brain" | Talks at Google

source: Talks at Google    2016年4月21日
Barbara Arrowsmith-Young visited Google's office in Seattle, WA to discuss her book "The Woman Who Changed Her Brain" and the latest research in cognitive transformation.

About the Author:
Barbara Arrowsmith-Young is the Director of Arrowsmith School and Arrowsmith Program. She holds a B.A.Sc. in Child Studies from the University of Guelph, and a Master’s degree in School Psychology from the University of Toronto.
Her work, begun in 1978, has been recognized as one of the first examples of the practical application of neuroplasticity, which, simply put, is the ability of the brain to change and rewire itself over one’s lifetime. The genesis of the Arrowsmith Program’s cognitive exercises lies in Barbara Arrowsmith-Young’s journey of discovery and innovation to overcome her own severe learning disabilities, a description of which appears in her book, “The Woman Who Changed Her Brain.

Reviewers have written: “Arrowsmith-Young has been able to describe, in a poignant and often unforgettable way, what it feels like to have a devastating learning disorder––but also what it’s like to leave it behind. Most everyone reading this book will find in its unique case histories, a new way to think about people’s cognitive difficulties in coping with the world. Here is an opportunity to understand the mental glitches and deeper problems of their own or of others in a new way.” “Arrowsmith-Young explains some of the most complex neurological concepts in a personal and breathtakingly simple way.” “It will open your mind to new possibilities on how to deal with 'traffic jams in the brain.'”
Her life has been a quest to help individuals address their learning difficulties, so they can experience the ease and joy of learning, and to have the cognitive capacities in place to realize their dreams.

Her program of cognitive exercises is implemented in schools in Canada, the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Thailand and South Korea.

Duncan Clark: "Alibaba: The House That Jack Ma Built" | Talks at Google

source: Talks at Google     2016年4月25日
An engrossing, insider’s account of how a teacher built one of the world’s most valuable companies—rivaling Walmart & Amazon—and forever reshaped the global economy.
In just a decade and half Jack Ma, a man from modest beginnings who started out as an English teacher, founded and built Alibaba into one of the world’s largest companies, an e-commerce empire on which hundreds of millions of Chinese consumers depend. Alibaba’s $25 billion IPO in 2014 was the largest global IPO ever. A Rockefeller of his age who is courted by CEOs and Presidents around the world, Jack is an icon for China’s booming private sector and the gatekeeper to hundreds of millions of middle class consumers.

Duncan Clark first met Jack in 1999 in the small apartment where Jack founded Alibaba. Granted unprecedented access to a wealth of new material including exclusive interviews, Clark draws on his own experience as an early advisor to Alibaba and two decades in China chronicling the Internet’s impact on the country to create an authoritative, compelling narrative account of Alibaba’s rise.

How did Jack overcome his humble origins and early failures to achieve massive success with Alibaba? How did he outsmart rival entrepreneurs from China and Silicon Valley? Can Alibaba maintain its 80% market share? As it forges ahead into finance and entertainment, are there limits to Alibaba’s ambitions? How does the Chinese government view its rise? Will Alibaba expand further overseas, including in the U.S.?

Clark tells Alibaba’s tale in the context of China’s momentous economic and social changes, illuminating an unlikely corporate titan as never before.

Duncan Clark was raised in the United Kingdom, the United States, and France, and has been based in Beijing since 1994, after four years as a technology investment banker with Morgan Stanley in London and Hong Kong. He first met Jack Ma in 1999, and worked as a consult with Alibaba in its early years. In 1994, he founded the leading investment advisory firm BDA China. An expert on China’s Internet sector, Clark has been invited to Stanford University as a Visiting Scholar, where the co-founded the “China 2.0” research program. He lives in Beijing.

Objective economic analysis is difficult to come by in this heated political moment, with deep budget cuts that disproportionately affect the poor and working class while the top one percent of Americans continues to amass wealth at a record pace.

Professor Richard D. Wolff's academic work and public lectures warning of a crisis of capitalism preceded the current disaster. Wolff will discuss the fallout of the economic collapse and the ongoing struggle over who will bear the massive costs.
THE NEW SCHOOL | http://www.newschool.edu
Wolff is professor emeritus of economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and is currently visiting professor in the graduate program in international affairs at The New School in New York City. Having accurately predicted the economic collapse of 2008, he is widely sought after as a commentator on the current financial crisis. Wolff is also noted for his ability to distill complex economic concepts and data into palatable, accessible language.
