Ernestine Fu and Michael Carter: Introduction to Venture Capital

Ernestine Fu is an angel investor in Silicon Valley, partner at venture capital firm Alsop Louie Partners, and instructor at Stanford University. Michael Carter is an entrepreneur and technologist who designed the initial WebSocket protocol for HTML5.
In this talk, Ernestine and Michael discuss the foundations of venture capital from the perspective of an investor and entrepreneur, respectively: sourcing deals and finding investment opportunities, term sheet basics, dynamics of negotiating a financing round, portfolio management, and getting into venture capital.
MS&E 476 Course Description: We often discuss how technology is reinvented and disrupted, but there is also a good amount of change occurring within the venture capital industry. Within the past several decades there have been new entrants, from incubators to angels to different models of venture capital.
The course explores changes in the venture capital industry: from the rise of Sand Hill Road and investing in the dot-com bubble, to incubators and accelerators, equity crowdfunding platform, and different models of venture capital today. Through lectures, guest speakers and interviews, the course explores how companies are funded, grown, and scaled, hearing from individuals who have been at the forefront of the industry as investors, technologists and entrepreneurs.

The United Nations Human Rights Council has recently declared that ISIS violence against the Yazidi religious minority constitutes a case of "ongoing genocide". Dr Valeria Cetorelli will present the first survey evidence on the number and demographic profile of Yazidis killed and enslaved by ISIS.
Valeria Cetorelli is a Research Officer at the LSE Middle East Centre and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Johns Hopkins Center for Refugee and Disaster Response. She is a demographer with expertise in survey methodology and data analysis. Her research focuses on conflict-affected, forced migrant and other vulnerable populations.
Sareta Ashraph is currently the Stanford Law School’s Global Practitioner-in-Residence. From May 2012 to November 2016, Sareta served as the Analyst on the Commission of Inquiry on the Syria, documenting violations of international law in the context of the ongoing conflict. Immediately prior to this, she occupied the same position on the Commission of Inquiry on Libya. Sareta is responsible for the investigation and drafting of the Commission’s June 2016 report They Came to Destroy: ISIS’s Crimes Against the Yazidis, which found that ISIS was - and is - committing the crime of genocide. Sareta is a member of Garden Court Chambers in London.

Nelida Fuccaro teaches modern Middle Eastern history at SOAS, University of London. Her research focuses on urban history, the history of oil and violence, ethnicity, nationalism and frontier societies. Between 2011 and 2014 she led with Ulrike Freitag an international project on the history of public violence in modern Middle Eastern cities sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Research Council of Great Britain and the Deutsche Forschungemeinschaft.

In this short BBC episode of In Our Time, Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the Dutch Jewish Philosopher Baruch Spinoza. For the radical thinkers of the Enlightenment, he was the first man to have lived and died as a true atheist. For others, including Samuel Taylor Coleridge, he provides perhaps the most profound conception of God to be found in Western philosophy. He was bold enough to defy the thinking of his time, yet too modest to accept the fame of public office and he died, along with Socrates and Seneca, one of the three great deaths in philosophy. Baruch Spinoza can claim influence on both the Enlightenment thinkers of the 18th century and great minds of the 19th, notably Hegel, and his ideas were so radical that they could only be fully published after his death. But what were the ideas that caused such controversy in Spinoza’s lifetime, how did they influence the generations after, and can Spinoza really be seen as the first philosopher of the rational Enlightenment? The worst problem about the Best System Analysis of laws and chances is that there aren't uniquely appropriate measures of the theoretical virtues such as simplicity and strength, or a uniquely correct exchange rate at which these virtues trade off in the determination of a best system. Plausibly, there is no robustly best system for our world: none that comes out best under any reasonable measures of the virtues and exchange rate between them. Some philosophers have argued that this entails that there are no Best System laws or chances in our world. I argue that this doesn't follow: rather, it follows that (some of) the Best System chances for our world are unsharp. (The situation with respect to laws is more complex.)
