A handful of species on Earth share a seemingly mysterious trait: a menstrual cycle. We’re one of the select few mammals on Earth that menstruate, and we also do it more than any other animal, even though it’s a waste of nutrients, and can be a physical inconvenience. So where’s the sense in this uncommon biological process? TED-Ed describes the history and evolution of menstruation.

The Sea-Pie and the sad sailor

source: Cambridge University        2015年10月16日
The idiosyncratic diaries of one man’s voyage from Liverpool to India in 1842, and the exquisite painted souvenirs he bought there, are among the treasures in the archives at the Centre of South Asian Studies.
Entitled The Sea-Pie, the pair of diaries are inscribed to the author Charles Augustus Whitehouse’s mother, and come with the message scrawled across the front “Here it comes something hot from the oven. Mind your eye or it may burn your fingers.” Alongside the diaries is a collection of tiny mica paintings bought in India as souvenirs by the sailor in 1842.
The archives of the Centre for South Asian Studies houses a unique collection of letters, diaries, photographs and films belonging to ordinary British people who documented their lives in India and South Asia.

Alain Badiou. Eternity in Time. 2010.

source: European Graduate School      2011年5月3日
http://www.egs.edu/ Alain Badiou, French philosopher and author, lecturing on the dialectical relationship between eternity and time. Badiou argues that eternity can be created in time, that is, something can be both created ad eternal. In this lecture Badiou opposed this thesis to others concerning the relationship between time and eternity, including that of mysticism (eternity is the same thing as time), religion (eternity and time are two different levels of existence), G.W.F. Hegel (the totality of time is the realization of the Absolute Idea), and Plato (time is an image of eternity). Alain Badiou ties the relationship between time and eternity to the goal and essence of philosophy, arguing that the question of its relation to time is the great question of philosophy. During the lecture, Badiou uses and discusses positive and negative determination, the concepts of place, freedom, the present, event, truth, and time. Public lecture for the students and faculty of the European Graduate School EGS Media and Communication department program Saas-Fee Switzerland Europe 2010 Alain Badiou.

Alain Badiou. Philosophy and Time. 2010.

source: European Graduate School       2011年5月3日
http://www.egs.edu/ Alain Badiou, French philosopher and author, lecturing on the paradoxical relationship between philosophy and time. Badiou argues that philosophy is both a proposition of justice, and a conviction of the existence of eternal truths. Philosophy, as such, is the proposition of the possibility of creating eternity in time. In this lecture, Alain Badiou draws on the similarities and distinctions of philosophy and religion, concluding that philosophy thinks the possibility of realizing religions' promises in this world, and without the hand of God. Badiou discusses the concepts of truth, justice, time, eternity, religion, interiority, exteriority, place, God, engagement, existence, and philosophy. Public lecture for the students and faculty of the European Graduate School EGS Media and Communication department program Saas-Fee Switzerland Europe 2010 Alain Badiou.

Alain Badiou. The Event as Creative Novelty 2009 (1-13)

source: European Graduate School       2009年9月18日
http://www.egs.edu/ Alain Badiou lecturing about mathematical logic in relation to Aristotles book 4 of the Metaphysics, in particular on the proposition of the excluded middle and its relation to the event as creative novelty. He proposes that of the four types of logic it is the fourth type of negation—the negation that obeys neither the principle of non-contradiction nor the principle of the excluded middle—is in fact the total destruction of any power of negativity. It is the null point of the first three propositions in which negation finally exists only as the negated. Badiou uses this proposition to illustrate his ontology that a thing—be it physical, biological, scientific, philosophic or juridical— is a pure multiplicity without any qualifying determination. The laws of the world are not laws of things themselves but instead laws between the relationships of things. Public open lecture for the students and faculty of the European Graduate School EGS Media and Communication Studies department program Saas-Fee Switzerland Europe 2006 Alain Badiou.

Alain Badiou. Beyond Positivism and Nihilism. 2010.

source: European Graduate School      2011年5月3日
http://www.egs.edu/ Alain Badiou, French philosopher and author, discusses the dialectic nature of philosophy, as something beyond positivism and nihilism. In this lecture, Alain Badiou articulates the opposition between Analytic Philosophy and Dialectic Philosophy, and this opposition's correspondence to the relationship between existence and being qua being. Badiou argues that there is a distance between 'to be' and 'to exist' and that this distance is of a dialectical nature, and that philosophy is the dialectical movement from being to existence, a movement which is not between but beyond both nihilism and positivism. During the lecture Badiou uses and discusses the concepts positivism, nihilism, negation, dialectics, ontology, knowledge, subjective experience, angst, as well as Descartes and Socrates, and the question of the what the beginning of philosophy is. Public lecture for the students and faculty of the European Graduate School EGS Media and Communication department program Saas-Fee Switzerland Europe 2010 Alain Badiou.
