Judith Butler. To preserve the life of the Other. 2016

source: European Graduate School Video Lectures 2016年10月13日
http://www.egs.edu Judith Butler, Hannah Arendt Chair and Professor of Philosophy at The European Graduate School / EGS.
To preserve the life of the Other. Public open lecture for the students of the Division of Philosophy, Art & Critical Thought at the European Graduate School EGS, Saas-Fee/Switzerland and Valetta/Malta. April 6 2016.
Judith Butler holds the Hannah Arendt Chair at The European Graduate School / EGS and is the Maxine Elliot Professor in the Department of Comparative Literature and the Program of Critical Theory at the University of California, Berkeley. She is a philosopher and one of the most challenging thinkers of our time. She rose to prominence in 1990 with Gender Trouble, which caused an unexpected stir as it unearthed foundational assumptions both in philosophy and in feminist theory, namely the facticity of sex. Controversial debate on the subject(s) extended far beyond academia to which Butler responded, in part, in Bodies that Matter (1993). Butler’s academic rigor is pursued through innovative and critical readings of a wide range of texts in philosophy, psychoanalysis and literature, challenging the confines of disciplinary thinking. Within, and beyond that, Judith Butler is also known for her critical voice in socio-political discourse and debate. Her qualities as a thinker are reflected in her openness to what is at stake in the present and in her passionate engagement in conversations with contemporaries in and outside academia.

Sarah Stewart, "The Violent Origin of the Earth and Moon"

source: Harvard University    2016年8月31日
The physical properties of our planet are intricately tied to the sequence of giant impact events that led to the formation of the Moon. The canonical giant impact model for lunar origin has been called into question by recent geochemical measurements of lunar rocks. Professor Stuart presents a new model for the origin of the Earth and Moon that reconciles the observations and highlights the importance of stochastic early events in shaping our habitable world.

Has Apple Lost Steve Jobs' Vision of Simplicity? | Ken Segall

source: Big Think    2016年9月7日
Turns out simplicity is really, really complicated. Having worked with Steve Jobs for years as an advertising creative director on Apple products, Ken Segall has taken a blood oath to uphold the principles of simplicity. Segall's latest book is "Think Simple: How Smart Leaders Defeat Complexity" (http://goo.gl/dGL35i).

Transcript - How does one define simplicity? Very good question. To me it is just a distilled thought; something that registers quickly; doesn't require a lot of explanations; seems intuitively obvious that kind of a thing. And I think a lot of businesses out of there tend to put things in terms that require more thought study or whatever and I think what made Steve Jobs such a genius was that he had this belief in the power of simplicity and he wanted to ensure that his products embodied that and the way the company communicated with people embodied that. So I think simplicity is this this thing, it's a concept really that gets applied to so many different things. It's not just oh look it's a simple product, it's the whole structure of the organization, the belief system, all that stuff is based on this idea that human beings have a built in desire for simpler things, we just don't like to labor over complex issues. And when someone has something to share with us, whether it's a product, it's service or whatever that the people who really understand that simplicity is a very powerful thing, those are the people who establish an emotional connection with their customers, which is something that Apple is very, very good at doing.
I do think that simplicity is one of the hardest things you can do. And it is deceptive in that way because it looks simple. The way I like to put it is that there is no such thing as simplicity, there is only the perception of simplicity, that every simple thing we see in this world, whether it's an iPhone, obviously years worth of research goes into making the little things that make an iPhone, but you can look at a simple website and we all know, we who create such things know that this beautifully simple site that you've built could have been a result of weeks or months of anguished debate and differences of opinion and arguments and whatever and you end up with something that's simple. Quine's objections to modal logic by Kane B

source: Kane B    2013年2月22日
Modal logic has had a huge influence on modern analytic philosophy, but there are those who believe that the whole enterprise of modal logic is misguided. The most prominent critic was W. V. O. Quine. In this series, I examine some of Quine's criticisms.

Lines of Thought: Telling the Story of History

source: Cambridge University   2016年9月16日
Shakespeare's 'First Folio', Dante's Divine Comedy, and fragments of Homer's Odyssey from the second century CE, are among the objects in our latest film celebrating Lines of Thought at Cambridge University Library.
A hand-coloured copy of Vesalius’ 1543 Epitome – one of the most influential works in western medicine – and the first written record of a dissection carried out in England are among the objects in our latest film celebrating Lines of Thought at Cambridge University Library.
Since March, some of the world’s most valuable books and manuscripts have been on display as Cambridge University Library celebrates its 600th birthday with a once-in-a-lifetime free exhibition of its greatest treasures.
The objects in Lines of Thought: Discoveries that Changed the World, which will close to the public on September 30, communicate 4,000 years of human thought through the Library’s unique and irreplaceable collections. More than 70 per cent of the exhibits are displayed to the public for the first time.
The exhibition investigates through six distinct themes how Cambridge University Library’s eight million books and manuscripts have transformed our understanding of life here on earth and our place among the stars.

Why Policy Fails - and How it Might Succeed | Matthew Taylor | RSA Replay

source: The RSA   2016年9月12日
Why Policy Fails - and How it Might Succeed with the RSA's Chief Executive, Matthew Taylor. Why do some policies succeed in bringing about widespread social change, but others founder?
In his annual RSA Chief Executive’s Lecture, Matthew Taylor examines the relationship between policy-making and social change. What distinguishes successful policy changes - for example, the smoking ban - from other ideas that seemed to have everything in their favour at the outset, and yet ultimately failed to deliver?
Is there a key to truly impactful policy creation and implementation? Or, to meet the scale and urgency of the challenges we’re currently facing, do we need to start thinking differently about how change happens - looking beyond policy to nothing less than a new paradigm for society and social progress?

Healing the Child Within with Charles Whitfield

source: New Thinking Allowed    2016年4月4日
Charles Whitfield, MD, is a board certified internist who transitioned into psychiatry. He is author of the best-selling book, Healing the Child Within. His numerous other books include Choosing God: A Bird’s Eye View of A Course in Miracles, Teachers of God: Further Reflections on a Course in Miracles, The Truth About Depression, The Truth About Mental Illness, Not Crazy: You May Not Be Mentally Ill, Wisdom to Know the Difference, and – co-authored with his wife, Barbara Harris Whitfield, The Power of Humility.
Here he presents his hypothesis that the child within can also be identified as the true self. When trauma occurs in childhood, this core aspect of human consciousness goes into hiding and is, typically, replaced with an egotistical false self. The recovery process is a hero’s journey involving many ups and downs. It requires a supportive and safe environment. The process may involve age regression, journaling, individual, and group therapy. We can learn from our mistakes and from our pain. Well over fifty percent of the population have had traumatic experiences in childhood.

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in "parapsychology" ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). He serves as dean of transformational psychology at the University of Philosophical Research. He teaches parapsychology for ministers in training with the Centers for Spiritual Living through the Holmes Institute. He has served as vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology, and is the recipient of its Pathfinder Award for outstanding contributions to the field of human consciousness. He is also past-president of the non-profit Intuition Network, an organization dedicated to creating a world in which all people are encouraged to cultivate and apply their inner, intuitive abilities.
