The universe began with a bang, but how will it end? In 1998 astronomers were surprised to find evidence of a strange force accelerating the universe, now known as dark energy. Robert Kirshner was a key member of the High-Z Supernova Team, one of two groups that discovered dark energy. He discussed their work at an event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the cosmic microwave background.
