論中國史書，《史記》、《漢書》無人不曉。《史記》為通史，然而詳於漢興百年間事，《漢書》記漢兩百多年事；范曄《後漢書‧班固傳》贊以「遷文直而事覈，固文赡而事詳。」皆為「良史」。本課程擬以《漢書》選讀為主，間以《史記》相對照，以見班固刪潤舊文、別出心裁者，非儘「剽竊」也。此種兩相對照之研讀，可判《史》、《漢》之高下，亦可於推敲、損益中習得文章之法。

Records of the Grand Historian and the Book of Han are two of the most well-known works of Chinese history. The Records is a chronological history, but it only records events up to a hundred years into the Han dynasty, less than half the span of the Book of Han. Fan Yeh, in the "Biography of Ban Gu,"in the Book of Later Han, praises it as being truthful and detailed; both are dependable histories. This course will read selections from the Book of Han while comparing it with the Records when necessary to reveal where Ban Gu revised and innovated instead of merely "plagiarizing." This comparative method can not only help us arrive at a judgment of the quality of the work, but also educate us in rhetoric and composition.
