In seinem 2013 erschienenen Buch „Der Erste Weltkrieg und das Ende der Habsburgermonarchie 1914 – 1918“ widmet er ein ausführliches Kapitel dem „blutigen Sonntag“, dem 28. Juni 1914, an dem der Thronfolger Franz Ferdinand von Österreich-Este und seine Gemahlin, Sophie Gräfin Chotek, in Sarajewo einem Attentat zum Opfer fielen. Nicht nur der Ablauf und die Hintergründe dieser Reise des Erzherzogs zu Manövern in Bosnien-Herzegowina, sondern auch die Reaktionen der Wiener Bürokratie nach der Ermordung des Thronfolgerpaares werden bis ins Detail vor Augen geführt.
Mit einem Vortrag von Manfried Rauchensteiner am 20. März 2014 begann die Ringvorlesung „Der Erste Weltkrieg in internationaler Perspektive. Österreich-Ungarn im Spannungsfeld von Entente und Mittelmächten".

Im Sommer 1914 jährte sich der Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs zum einhundertsten Mal. Das Institut für Geschichtswissenschaft und Europäische Ethnologie der Universität Innsbruck lud zu diesem Anlass im Sommersemester 2014 hochkarätige Experten zu Gastvorträgen nach Innsbruck ein, die den Ersten Weltkrieg aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven beleuchteten. Im Wintersemester 2016/17 lehrt der ehemalige Bundespräsident Heinz Fischer an der Uni Innsbruck zum Thema „Die Geschichte und Demokratie-Entwicklung der Zweiten Republik“. Die Studierenden erwerben dabei, untermauert von persönlichen Erfahrungen, Kenntnisse über die mehr als 70-jährige Geschichte der Zweiten Republik, von April 1945 bis Ende 2016. In der Vorlesung wird gezeigt, dass sich im Zuge der letzten sieben Jahrzehnte nicht nur die ökonomischen und sozialen Strukturen verändert haben, sondern auch die Verfassungsstruktur, die Parteienlandschaft, die Medienlandschaft, die Praxis des Parlamentarismus und – bedingt durch Österreichs EU-Beitritt – auch der außenpolitische Bezugsrahmen.

In der Vorlesung wird gezeigt, dass sich im Zuge der letzten sieben Jahrzehnte nicht nur die ökonomischen und sozialen Strukturen verändert haben, sondern auch die Verfassungsstruktur, die Parteienlandschaft, die Medienlandschaft, die Praxis des Parlamentarismus und – bedingt durch Österreichs EU-Beitritt – auch der außenpolitische Bezugsrahmen.

Im Wintersemester 2016/17 lehrt der ehemalige Bundespräsident Heinz Fischer an der Uni Innsbruck zum Thema „Die Geschichte und Demokratie-Entwicklung der Zweiten Republik“. Die Studierenden erwerben dabei, untermauert von persönlichen Erfahrungen, Kenntnisse über die mehr als 70-jährige Geschichte der Zweiten Republik, von April 1945 bis Ende 2016.
