P. Sufenas Virius Lupus (his spiritual name) is a practicing polytheist and scholar. Here he notes that, while the idea of the werewolf may seem spooky, it entails shamanistic practices similar to those found in Native American wolf clans. The Egyptians worshipped the god, Anubis, who had a human form and a canine head. He was a psychopomp, or initiator into the depths of the psyche. In different, ancient traditions ritual practices associated with the wolf and certain other animals were relegated to young men who lived on the margins of their societies. They often served as an early warning system to protect those societies from invaders. Their werewolf cult rituals were a rite of passage as they became reintegrated into their societies.

Here he points out that, prior to the Victorian era, there were no specific concepts for homosexuality and heterosexuality in western culture. Ancient peoples had many differing notions of sexual identity. Various ancient priestly cult members were regarded as neither male nor female. Sexual relations in ancient times were often based as much upon social status as sexual identity. Lupus describes his own interest in the ancient cult of Antinous, the young male lover of the Roman emperor Hadrian (who was also married and considered something of a lady’s man). After Antinous drowned in the Nile River, he was deified. Many temples were built in his honor.

Here he points out that, in the mythological history of humanity, there have been many occasions in which ruling deities have been overthrown. Kronos, with the help of his mother Gaia, overthrew his father Ouranos. Zeus, in turn, with the help of his mother Rhea, overthrew Kronos. He suggests that Demeter, an earth goddess, wished to overthrow Zeus. He implies that the Eleusinian Mysteries were held, in part, to enlist support for Demeter in her struggle against Zeus. All of these conflicts set the earth goddess against the ruling sky god.

The Ancient Mystery Traditions with P. Sufenas Virius Lupus

Here he notes that the Orphic and Eleusinian mystery traditions of ancient Greece were influenced by earlier Egyptian initiation rituals. The mythologies of these cults all refer to a journey into the underworld. In ancient Greece, virtually all persons of status in society were initiated into these cults. The rituals are not fully known, as they were protected by solemn oaths of secrecy. However, it seems clear from accounts that are available that the initiates found them to be a source of inspiration. Often initiates reported that they no longer feared death. He suggests that the rituals may have been a rehearsal, of sorts, for actual death. While some ancient traditions involved spiritualistic communication with the deceased, the mystery traditions seemed, instead, to entail communication with higher consciousness or deities.

Here he notes that, in actual practice, polytheistic traditions are similar to those of the Catholic Church with its many devotional rites regarding saints. As certain humans are elevated to sainthood, so various polytheistic traditions have elevated other humans to the status of deities. Ancient Roman and Greek polytheism also included elements of satire – and even materialism. He, personally, maintains a clear distinction between the Jungian notion of archetypes that psychologists often associate with the pantheons of ancient religions and the living presence of willful, non-corporeal entities that are the foundation of polytheistic engagement.
