Victor Burgin is a British artist, cultural theorist and photographer. He studied Painting and Philosophy at The Royal College of Art, London (1962-1965) and Painting, Sculpture and Philosophy at Yale University, New Haven (1965-1967). He taught photography at Nottingham Trent University (1967-1973) and then at the Polytechnic of Central London (1973-1988). Burgin was a Professor of Art History and Professor of History of Consciousness at the University of California, Santa Cruz (1988-2000) and currently holds the Emeritus Millard Chair of Fine Art at Goldsmith’s College, University of London.
Victor Burgin’s artistic work and his theoretical writings are often concerned with spatial and temporal relationships and with a tension between real (exterior) space and psychological (interior) space. Burgin claims: “To have an interest in the relation between real exterior space and psychological space is quite simply to be interested in the image. The ‘image’ is neither a material entity nor simply an optical event, an imprint of light on the retina, it is also a complex psychological process. It is in this sense that the image is defined as essentially ‘virtual’ in the phenomenological perspective that Deleuze derived from Henri Bergson. The ‘image-for-commerce’ is something that can be propped on an easel beside an auctioneer, something that can sit easily on the cover of a magazine, something that lends itself to becoming logo or brand. But the image is a different thing outside the circulation of commodities, outside the order of the spectacle – which is to say, outside of modern Western history. For example, in the Western tradition there are things – objects, ‘images’, whatever – and then there is the space between them, which is empty. In a certain Japanese tradition the space between – ma – is as tangible as any material thing and is as charged with sense. This is the place and the substance of the ‘image’ as I understand the term.”
In his works, Burgin also attempts to provide an answer to the question: how do memory and fantasy shape and distort real objects and actual space? This is why he also explores the relationship between words and images; a relationship that, according to Burgin, produces a “virtual” or “psychological” image. His work is influenced by many different theorists and philosophers, but the most important ones are Sigmund Freud, Michel Foucault, Henri Lefebvre, Andrè Breton, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Roland Barthes.

Michael Hardt. Michael Hardt, born 1960 is an American literary theorist and political philosopher based at Duke University. Michael Hardt's recent writings deal primarily with the political, legal, economic, and social aspects of globalization. Perhaps his most famous work is Empire, a book about the current global power structure, written with Antonio Negri. The sequel to Empire, called Multitude: War and Democracy in the Age of Empire, describes the possible democratic alternatives to that structure, was released in August, 2004, and details the idea of the multitude (which Michael Hardt and Negri initially elaborated in Empire) as the potential site of a global democratic movement. Many of Michael Hardts seminars focus on the work of important figures in the history of critical theory and political theory, such as Marx, Jefferson, Gramsci, Foucault, Deleuze, and Guattari.
Sometimes referred to as the "Communist Manifesto of the 21st Century", Empire proposes that the forces of current class oppression, namely - corporate globalization and commodification of services (or "production of affects") have the potential to fuel social change of unprecedented dimensions.
Born in Washington DC, Michael Hardt attended Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, Maryland. He studied engineering at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania from 1978 to 1983. In college during the 1970s energy crisis, Michael Hardt began to take an interest in alternative energy sources. Talking about his college politics, Michael Hardt said, "I thought that doing alternative energy engineering for third world countries would be a way of doing politics that would get out of all this campus political posing that I hated."

Politics, Psychoanalysis and the Subject
In this seminar, we will focus on Badiou’s political and ethical thought in the context of his larger re­formulation of philosophical categories of truth, the subject, universality and logic. Beginning with Badiou’s early, and politically charged philosophical text, Theory of the Subject and on through to his more recent texts on ethics and politics, including St. Paul, the Ethics, this seminar will place Badiou’s politics in relation to the larger turn to political ontology in continental philosophy. The seminar will compare and contrast Badiou’s political and ethical thought in with his contemporaries Deleuze, Derrida, Nancy, Žižek, Meillassoux and Rancière. It will take special focus on Badiou’s political break with Lacan in Theory of the Subject and trace the consequences of this political break with psychoanalysis and its relation to Badiou’s unique theory of the subject. Badiou’s ongoing debates with Žižek, Miller and the larger field of post­-Lacanian thought will also be examined in relation to concepts such as the psychoanalytic institution, the drives, politics and desire.

Manuel DeLanda, (born 1952 in Mexico City), is a writer, artist and distinguished philosopher who has lived in New York since 1975. He is a professor and the Gilles Deleuze Chair of Contemporary Philosophy and Science at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, a professor at the Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, and professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. DeLanda was formerly an Adjunct Associate Professor at Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University (New York).

He is the author of War In the Age of Intelligent Machines (1991), A Thousand Years of Nonlinear History (1997), Intensive Science and Virtual Philosophy (2002), A New Philosophy of Society: Assemblage Theory and Social Complexity (2006), Deleuze: History and Science (2010), and Philosophy and Simulation: The Emergence of Synthetic Reason (2011). He has published many articles and essays and lectured extensively in Europe and in the United States. His work focuses on the theories of the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze on one hand, and modern science, self-organizing matter, artificial life and intelligence, economics, architecture, chaos theory, history of science, nonlinear science, cellular automata on the other. De Landa became a principal figure in the "new materialism" based on his application of Deleuze's realist ontology. His universal research into "morphogenesis" - the production of the semi-stable structures out of material flows that are constitutive of the natural and social world - has been of interest to theorists across many academic and professional disciplines.
